I am posting this to save some people their time and energy trying to figure out how to get the DirecTV app to connect to the new Genie 2 DVR. As of right now (11/12/17), it won't. It took me 15 phone calls to DirecTV and speaking with numerous technical support specialists before they finally sent a technician out to our house.

That doesn't solve the problem, though, from DirecTV's perspective. A typical home might have one main box and multiple Genies on various TVs. If the DirecTV content is available via Apple TV, people would have an incentive to replace those additional Genies with Apple TVs.
